What is MAPP gas?
MAPP gas is a high-temperature blow torch fuel based on propylene. The original methylacetylene-propadiene blend was discontinued years ago, so what is sold as MAPP gas today – including Salvus MAP-HTi and Firemaster – is high-purity propylene, which burns hotter and cleaner than propane and holds its pressure better in the cold.
How hot does MAPP gas burn compared with propane?
Salvus MAP-HTi is rated to a maximum flame temperature of 1,985°C in air, against roughly 1,950°C for propane. The headline gap is small, but propylene sits at a higher cylinder pressure and delivers more gas per second, so in practice it transfers heat noticeably faster – a 22mm or 28mm copper joint reaches soldering temperature quicker, especially outdoors in winter.
Which torches do your MAPP gas cylinders fit?
All our 400g cylinders use the CGA600 connection – the standard 1" US thread found on most trade blow torch heads. That includes every torch we sell: the Salvus Turbo Torch, the FireMaster 3, the Profire manual-ignition torch and the TLW lead welding torch, plus most popular MAPP and propane style torches you may already own.
What gas do your blow torches take?
All of them take any CGA600 threaded cylinder, so any 400g Salvus or Firemaster MAPP cylinder on this page will screw straight on. CGA600 propane cylinders fit the same heads too, if you would rather run propane for lighter work.
Can I use a Firemaster cylinder on a Salvus torch, or vice versa?
Yes. Both brands use the same CGA600 thread, so they are fully interchangeable across our torches – buy on price and pack size rather than matching brands.
Which cylinders will not fit a MAPP gas torch?
EN417 7/16" screw-on butane cartridges, self-sealing camping cartridges and puncture-type pierceable canisters will not fit a CGA600 torch head, and no adaptor should be used to force it. If the thread on your cylinder is not a 1" CGA600, it is the wrong fuel for the torch.
How long does a 400g MAPP gas cylinder last?
At a measured gas flow of 4g per minute, a 400g cylinder gives around 160 minutes of working time. That is roughly 5 hours across a 2 pack, over 10 hours across a 4 pack, around 16 hours across a 6 pack and about 64 hours across the 24-cylinder trade case.
Is MAPP gas hot enough for soldering and brazing?
Yes. MAPP gas is the usual choice for soldering copper pipe and silver brazing, and it handles heat treatment, freeing seized nuts and bolts, lead welding and roofing work. Paired with a swirl-flame turbo head it gives faster, more even heat than a plain propane flame.
Are MAPP gas cylinders refillable, and how should I store them?
No – they are non-refillable single-use cylinders manufactured to EN 12205. Store them upright in a cool, well-ventilated place away from heat and direct sunlight, never in a hot van cab or a sealed cupboard: the contents are extremely flammable and under pressure, so the cylinder may burst if heated.
